Bollywood Honours Legendary Singer
Do you know which singer holds the record for the most songs ever recorded: Elvis of the swiveling hips? Old blue eyes? In fact, the record was held for several years by an Indian lady by the name of Lata Mangeshkar.
You may not know the name, but if you’ve ever watched a Bollywood movie, the odds are you’ve already been touched by the throaty tunes of Lata via the lips of Aishwarya Rai, Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif—or any number of Bollywood beauties.
As one of India’s best known and most respected playback singers, Lata has recorded songs for over 1000 Bollywood movies during a career that has spanned nearly seven decades. Lata was born September 28, 1929 and on her 82nd birthday Bollywood gathered to pay tribute to this legendary songstress.
Sonu Nigam, who recently released a collaboration with Britney Spears, said: “I wish her very happy birthday filled with loads of love and care. I think it is our fortune to take birth in the times of Lata-ji. She is an inspiration for me and will always continue to inspire several other generations.”
Mangeshkar was featured in the Guinness Book of World Records from 1974 to 1991 for having made the most recordings in the world. The claim was that she had recorded approximately 25,000 solo, duet, and chorus-backed songs in 20 Indian languages between 1948 to 1974 (30,000 songs between 1948 and 1987, according to the 1987 edition).
There’s been some controversy surrounding the claim. Several people have raised concerns, claiming that Mangeshkar’s younger sister, Asha Bhosle, has recorded more songs. Mangeshkar herself stated that she does not keep a record of the number of songs recorded by her, and that she did not know from where Guinness Book editors got their information. Either way, the achievement is awesome and deserves recognition.
Lata is only the second vocalist to have ever been awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour. For her birthday, she said, “I do not celebrate my birthday in a lavish way. I do not believe in cutting cakes. It will be a family affair…where all family members will be present. My whole day will be spent in accepting wishes from friends and fans worldwide. Later in the day, I will go for Hridaynath award function.”
