Salman’s Ready for Box Office Gold
Ready is directed by Anees Bazmee who says: “It’s a perfect situational comedy – a family flick with no vulgarity.” There is no exposure – even though Anees laughingly says that he tried to get the film’s leading lady, Asin, to show a bit of skin.
The film revolves around Prem Kapoor (Salman Khan) and his family and Sanjana’s (Asin Thottumkal) family. Prem is sent to the airport to pick up his future wife, Pooja, but he purposely goes to the wrong terminal, so he can tell his family the girl never showed up and disentangle himself from the arrangement.
Sanjana, in the meantime, is trying to elude her two Mafioso uncles, who are forcing her into a different marriage that will enable them to take her family fortune. When Sanjana learns of Prem’s plot, she pretends to be Pooja, who Prem has never actually met, in order to escape. Predictably, the two begin to develop feeling for each other, but Sanjana’s uncles aren’t about to give up. Plotting and confusion add to the comic appeal of the film, but Prem eventually saves the day with a solution that works for everyone.
Ready was released June 3, 2011. Upon release, it became the second highest grossing Bollywood film on opening day, followed by the second highest weekend grossing film, after Dabangg. It’s currently the highest grossing Bollywood film of 2011, and the third highest grossing Bollywood film of all time after 3 Idiots and Dabangg.
According to Anees, Ready offers everything audiences love best about Salman—solid emotional performances, music, dancing, wit—everything.”
Whether or not Ready seizes the title of highest grossing Bollywood film remains to be seen, but audiences seem to agree that it’s a wonderful way to spend an afternoon with Salman. The movie is currently sitting at an 80% audience approval rating.
