Abhishek’s Bringing Dum Back
Amitabh Bachchan first made his mark in Hindi cinema as the remarkable Inspector Vijay in Zanjeer. It seems Abishek’s following in his dad’s footsteps, because he’s bringing the same dazzle, arrogance, and talent to Rohan Sippy’s Dum Maro Dum as tough-talking Inspector A.C. Kamath.
The film has earned Abhishek considerable critical acclaim for his role as a no-nonsense cop on a mission to vanquish the drug trade in Goa. Predictably, this is dangerous business, and his life is turned upside down when tragedy strikes. Acclaimed critic Taran Adarsh states, “Abhishek is super in the role of a tough cop whose life undergoes a U-turn when personal tragedy strikes. He projects varied emotions ranging from rage to helplessness without going overboard”.
The new role seems to have reignited fan interest, and Adarsh gives Abishek full credit for the film’s success: “I can’t remember the last time my cinemas had inquiries for block bookings. People are forming queues to try and get tickets. The police were even called in for crowd control!”
It’s great news for Abi, who’s been looking for a box office success. He allegedly took the role very seriously, discussing character nuances with the director.
Dum Maro Dum is being co-produced by a foreign studio that is planning to internationalize the film as a thriller.
Abishek recently joked at an award show that he has a license to copy his dad. If Abi is following Amitabh’s footsteps, he has some mighty big shoes to fill—but he’s surely off to a stellar start!
