Shahrukh’s Sci-fi Flick Ra.One Stuns Box Office Records Before Release
Box offices beware. SRK is back in sculpted, muscle-hugging leather, and he means business—lots and lots of business. Upcoming sci-fi flick Ra.One has clinched its place among Bollywood blockbusters by selling satellite rights to the film to Star India for Rs 40 crore (about nine million dollars). By surpassing the previous record of 33 crore set by 3 Idiots, Ra.One has become the highest grossing Bollywood film of all time—all before its theatrical release, which is slated for July 1, 2011.
According to Khan, “Ra.One means Random Access—Version 1.0.” The highly anticipated film is directed by Anubhav Sinha and produced under Red Chillies Entertainment, Khan’s production company. SRK will be featured prominently as the baddie-smashing hero while the female lead belongs to Kareena Kapoor. Arjun Rampal will rise to the role of villain and nemesis.
Sources reveal, “Shahrukh is totally involved in every aspect of the film’s marketing and branding. He’s actively sitting with experts and planning several marketing strategies while submitting his own ideas. The film was expensive to make, so obviously, as a producer, he wants to make as much money through pre-distribution channels.”
“This ambitious Bollywood flick had many of Hollywood’s best technicians and VFX artists working hard to create a sophisticated, other worldly look—no expense was spared,” says sources.
If Ra.One combines spectacular special effects with a compelling story, it could be poised to change the face of Bollywood. Will Ra.One seize a place beside Hollywood’s legendary cult classics like Star Wars and Star Trek? Only time will tell if this film is hip or hype.
